ChatGPT’s ‘Canvas’ Interface

OpenAI has introduced a new "canvas" interface for ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing the collaborative capabilities of the chatbot. The canvas interface is a major update to ChatGPT's visual interface since its launch two years ago.

• ChatGPT’s new interface mirrors Anthropic’s Artifacts, launched in June and the recently popular AI code editor Cursor. OpenAI aims to match competitors and add new features to grow its paying users.
• It allows users to manually change text or code, highlight specific sections for editing suggestions and feedback, and better understand the context of their tasks.
• The canvas provides users with shortcuts for suggesting inline edits, checking grammar and clarity, adjusting text length and reading level, and debugging code. It also allows for code translation into other languages.
• Prior to the canvas interface, users had to repeatedly input new prompts to refine the chatbot's output. The canvas interface provides more control and includes features like a back button to restore previous versions of work.

Texas Wants Data Centers to Build Power Plants

Texas’ top electricity regulator, Thomas Gleeson, suggests that AI data centers may need to build their own power plants if they wish to connect to the Texas grid.

• AI data centers use as much electricity as cities. Placing them near power plants could strain the grid if they consume all the power. Texas already struggles with consistent power due to its growing economy and population.
• Gleeson emphasizes that data center developers must be prepared to supply their own power if they want to connect to the grid within 12 to 15 months. Many of these corporations have substantial financial resources to fund new power plant construction.
• Developers are encouraged to possibly build power plants that generate more electricity than needed for their data centers, with the excess power being sold to the grid.
• Amazon Web Services plans to invest $650 million in a data center in Pennsylvania connected to the Susquehanna nuclear plant. And Constellation Energy Corp. intends to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to supply power to Microsoft.
