Hacker Can Steal User Data From ChatGPT

Security researcher Johann Rehberger identified a vulnerability in ChatGPT that allowed attackers to implant false information into the model's long-term memory, which OpenAI categorized as a safety issue rather than a security concern.

• To demonstrate the vulnerability, Rehberger created a proof-of-concept that could exfiltrate user data by tricking ChatGPT into storing false memories, effectively allowing attackers to manipulate future interactions with the model.
• ChatGPT's long-term memory feature, which began testing in February and was widely released in September 2024, retains information from past conversations, enabling the model to recall details about users in subsequent interactions.
• The exploit occurred through indirect prompt injection, where malicious instructions were embedded in untrusted content (such as emails or documents), resulting in the model adopting false memories about the user.
• After privately reporting the issue in May, OpenAI closed the inquiry but later issued a partial fix after Rehberger provided a PoC that demonstrated the exploit's potential to send user data to an external server.
• Although OpenAI's fix mitigated some risks, the researcher noted that untrusted content could still trigger prompt injections, leading to the storage of harmful information in ChatGPT's memory.
