OpenAI’s 'Fair' Competition Recipe
On October 2, OpenAI announced an impressive $6.6 billion in funding, doubling its valuation to $157 billion in just nine months. This round was led by Thrive Capital with participation from Microsoft, NVIDIA, SoftBank, and others.
- Thrive Capital, led by Josh Kushner, contributed $1.3 billion. Microsoft added another $750 million to its previous $13 billion investment.
- OpenAI imposed unusual conditions on investors, forbidding them from supporting competitors such as Anthropic, xAI, and even Safe Superintelligence (SSI), founded by OpenAI's co-founder Ilya Sutskever. This led to criticism from notable figures like Elon Musk.
- Additionally, according to Bloomberg, OpenAI, which is currently managed by a non-profit entity, is expected to transition to a for-profit model. If this shift doesn't occur within two years, investors can reclaim their funds.

Nearly Half of Americans Say AI Will Reduce Jobs
Just under half of Americans are concerned that the rapid adaptation of generative artificial intelligence will reduce the number of jobs, according to a report released Wednesday by Liberty Street Economics.
- The survey respondents were 55% female, with a median age of 49. Racial representation included 4% American Indian, 4% Asian or Pacific Islander, 9% Black, 8.8% Hispanic, and 84% White. In terms of employment, 45% worked full time and 12% part time, with over 39% holding a college degree or higher education.
- 31% of respondents had used genAI tools. Users were typically younger, more likely to be male, college-educated, and less likely to be White.
- Of those respondents who use genAI, 66% used it to gather information and advice while 48% used it for entertainment and 39% for work. When asked about worker productivity, 60% of users said it had no impact on their productivity while 35% said it increased their productivity.
- One industry that is likely to be most immediately impacted by the explosion of genAI is the entertainment industry. In August, the New York Times interviewed dozens of editors and other craftspeople and virtually all were worried the technology will soon replace them.
