This year's DevDay focused on incremental AI tool and API improvements for developers. OpenAI announced major updates focused on improving infrastructure and the developer ecosystem, rather than on end-users:

• Realtime API helps developers make almost real-time "speech-to-speech" apps. The API offers six different voices from OpenAI, letting developers easily create advanced voice assistants and conversational AI tools.
• Prompt Caching reduces costs and latency for developers by caching frequent contexts between API calls. Offers up to 50% savings for cached input tokens, aiding those with many API requests. Similar to Anthropic's cache, it needs prompts structured with static content first and variable content last.
• Model Distillation allows developers to fine-tune smaller models using outputs from larger ones like o1-preview and GPT-4o. This reduces computational costs while maintaining functionality, making advanced AI accessible to smaller companies.
• Visual Fine-Tuning lets developers enhance GPT-4o's visual understanding using images and text. This update enables applications in autonomous driving, medical imaging, and visual search. Grab, a Southeast Asian tech company, saw a 20% rise in lane count accuracy and a 13% boost in speed sign recognition after using visual fine-tuning.

AI Revolutionizes Ovarian Cancer Screening

Johns Hopkins researchers, led by Victor E. Velculescu, created a liquid biopsy to better detect ovarian cancer. It uses protein biomarkers, cell-free DNA fragments, and AI analysis. This method can tell benign from cancerous tumors, unlike ultrasounds, potentially reducing unnecessary surgeries.

• The AI-powered DELFI test method focuses on fragmentomics, which identifies unique DNA fragmentation patterns in cancer cells. This method has shown success in detecting lung cancer and now, ovarian cancer.
• The approach uses two known protein biomarkers, CA-125 and HE4, along with cfDNA fragment analysis. While CA-125 and HE4 alone aren't reliable for detection, combining them with cfDNA and AI analysis enhances accuracy.
• The study, reported in Cancer Discovery, evaluated 591 women and used a machine learning model. They achieved high specificity (>99%) and varied sensitivity (72%-100%) across different stages of ovarian cancer. CA-125 alone showed lower detection rates compared to the combined method.
• Initial results were based on samples from 479 women in the Netherlands and Denmark, and confirmed with 112 women in the United States. The combined method detected 73% of all cancers and 81% of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma accurately, with almost no false positives.
