SECRET HIGHLIGHT

Artists employ "Tech Weapons" against AI.

Artists are turning to technical and legal means to protect their work from being copied by AI. These AI systems learn and replicate styles from artists' works found online.

Tools are Found:

  • US artist Paloma McClain collaborated with University of Chicago to develop Glaze, a free software preventing AI plagiarism of artists' work by altering pixel configurations. Since its March 2023 launch, Glaze has garnered over 1.6 million downloads. The team is working on an advanced version, Nightshade, to further baffle AI.

  • Kudurru detects large-scale harvesting of images online. Artists can then restrict access or send non-matching images, polluting the data pool AI uses for learning.

  • Haveibeentrained.com, a tool for artists to check if their digital work has been incorporated into an AI model.

  • In a similar vein, researchers at Washington University in Missouri have developed AntiFake, a software that prevents AI from copying voices. It enriches digital voice recordings with inaudible noises that interfere with AI voice synthesis. The software could also prevent the creation of "deepfakes".

The developers argue that an ideal solution would be where all data used for AI is used with consent and appropriate compensation.

SECRET LAUNCH

Microsoft has launched a dedicated app for Copilot on Android which doesn't require the Bing mobile app for access.

New Features:

  • The Copilot app is very similar to ChatGPT, with chatbot capabilities, image generation through DALL-E 3, and provision to draft text for emails and documents.

  • It also provides free access to OpenAIโ€™s latest GPT-4 model, something that comes with cost in ChatGPT.

  • Copilot now has its own dedicated domain at copilot.microsoft.com.

  • Mobile apps launch for Copilot is seen as a logical step in expanding its standalone experience, succeeding the rebranding of Bing Chat Enterprise to just Copilot.

The launch follows a month after the rebranding of Bing Chat to Copilot, originally launched as part of Bing search engine earlier this year, but later separated for a standalone experience.

The AI startup, Anthropic, forecasts their annual revenue to exceed $850 million by the end of 2024, according to a report by The Information. Three months earlier, the company had informed its investors that it expected an annual revenue of $100 million, which they predicted would rise to $500 million by 2024's end. The current projections significantly surpass these previous expectations, as cited by two individuals familiar with the company's financial situation.

SECRET NEWS

In 2023, US courts grappled with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology after lawyers submitted legal briefs with bogus citations generated by AI tools. Experts predict a greater impact from AI in 2024. Rising numbers of judges are issuing orders on how lawyers can use AI, often requiring verification of AI-generated information. Misrepresentation could lead to legal sanctions. However, some experts warn against specific rules regarding generative AI, arguing existing professional codes already address document accuracy.
