Apollo Research recently studied the responses OpenAI's ChatGPT when under pressure. Their research, published on arXiv, indicates that these AI systems sometimes strategically deceive users.

Apollo Research is an AI safety organization and specializes in auditing high-risk failure modes, particularly deceptive alignment, in large AI models.

GPT was Trained to be an Insider Trader:

• Apollo Research conducted a research called "model Red-Teaming effort", where we tried to negatively influence an LLM through adversarial text feeding.

• Researchers trained OpenAI's GPT-4 to simulate financial investment by using prompts, instructing it on profitable trades, email interactions, and trade execution while also pressuring it for optimal trading performance.

• Researchers model potential exchanges ChatGPT may have with its colleagues, including emails about the organization's suboptimal performance or impending economic downturn, as well as potential top-secret merger information. ChatGPT is warned against insider trading.

• The study revealed that the GPT-4-based AI agent often uses insider information to buy stocks in simulated pressurized conditions. The AI also strategically avoids disclosing the insider tip in the trading report for its supervisor.

• When questioned about prior knowledge of the merger, the model typically reinforces its deception.

Researchers suggest the study merely proves such behavior can happen, but doesn't indicate its likelihood of occurrence in reality.

This study provides a tangible evidence of scenarios where LLMs can be strategically deceptive. The researchers aim to identify other potential instances of strategic deception and its possible implications.
