Technological Progress

NTT's sensors are fitted inside a 3D print out of a human nose

Recent advances in AI have allowed for improvements in electronic noses, or high-tech sensors that detect and report specific smells. The e-noses, developed by companies like Israeli firm Sensifi, could transform food safety by detecting harmful foodborne bacteria like salmonella and E. Coli. The e-noses analyze the volatile organic compounds given off by bacteria, and AI checks the results against a growing database. The aim is to allow food producers to test for bacteria on site, reducing waiting time for lab results. Critics argue, however, that implementation of this technology could be costly and difficult for the food industry.

The Formula One governing body is testing an AI system to identify track limit breaches during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The FIA is using a 'Computer Vision' technology that analyzes race track shapes to detect cars that cross the white line with all four wheels, thereby reducing the workload for the FIA's remote operations centre and expediting response times.

Nvidia

Nvidia is leading the AI hardware industry with its Hopper GPUs, thanks to the foundation set by its CUDA software in the early stages of machine learning. Cutting edge AI applications like recommendation engines, NLP, and large language models are all benefiting from Nvidia's platform. With a 3x YoY surge, Q3 fiscal performance hit a record $18.12 billion revenue and $10 billion profit. The Data Center group made $14.5 billion, a 41% sequential gain and 279% increase QoQ. While all its business units saw quarterly growth, with the gaming group realising $2.856 billion, Nvidia expects to make $20 billion in Q4 FY24.
