Microsoft Research has introduced Phi-2, a small language model operable on laptops and smartphones. Boasting 2.7 billion parameters, Phi-2 shows performance comparable to larger models such as Meta's Llama 2-7B and Mistral-7B, each having 7 billion parameters.

The Progress of Phi-2:

• The key to achieving high performance with Phi-2 includes the use of high quality "textbook-quality" training data, and the utilization of innovative scaling techniques for knowledge transfer from Phi-1.5 to Phi-2.

• Phi-2 is suitable for several research explorations, including mechanistic interpretability, safety improvements, and fine-tuning experimentations.

• Phi-2 outperforms popular language models by Mistral and Llama across several academic benchmarks. Despite being smaller in size, it also matches or outperforms Google's recently announced Gemini Nano 2.

Currently, Phi-2 is solely for research and not for commercial use. Microsoft describes it as perfect for researchers because of its small size and availability on the Azure AI Studio model catalog.

Tesla has revealed its second-gen Optimus robot, featuring increased dexterity and a sleeker design compared to its predecessor.

The new model is equipped with Tesla-designed actuators and sensors, possesses an actuated neck with two degrees of freedom, and walks 30 percent faster, imitating human feet.

The Optimus robot's weight has been reduced by 10 kilograms without compromising functionality, it has a better overall balance, as well as full-body control, displayed by the robot squatting and standing again in a video.
