SECRET HIGHLIGHT

Mistral is given a “SuperWeapon” to fight OpenAI.

Imaged by DALL·E-3

On our December 11, 2023, AI Secret, we delved into the crazy financing of Mistral AI, a startup based in Paris, and their advantages in developing large-scale models. Nevertheless, OpenAI/Microsoft maintains a dominant position in the field of AI worldwide. Mistral AI will face challenges in trying to match OpenAI's progress via conventional business channels.

The EU has recognized this trend and is supporting local AI startups to enhance processing power for model training on EU-based supercomputers.

Purpose of Plan:

  • Mistral AI joined the early pilot phase of the plan after it was announced in September and initiated last month.

  • The plan is for "centers of excellence" to support the development of dedicated AI algorithms that run on the EU's supercomputers.

  • The "AI support center" is coming with a dedicated track for SMEs and startups to get help in getting the most out of the EU's supercomputing resource.

The EU's investment into supercomputers has been growing over the past five+ years, including a cluster of eight machines located around the region.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has an impressive user base of 180 million, with 100 million users actively participating on a weekly basis. The majority of its users hail from non-U.S. regions, leaving limited time for the development of the AI industry in the EU.

Google will limit the types of election-related questions that its chatbot and search generative experience BARD can respond to as the company prepares for the U.S. presidential election in 2024. This move comes as governments worldwide push for greater AI regulation. Facebook had announced in November that it was excluding political campaigns and advertisers from using its new AI-generated advertising products. In contrast, Elon Musk's social media platform, X, will allow political ads from candidates and parties, while the European Union requires clear labelling of political ads on platforms and the disclosure of budgets and target elections.
