OpenAI has “banned” TikTok AI.

OpenAI has temporarily closed the account of Chinese internet company ByteDance, following a report that the TikTok parent firm has been employing OpenAI's tech for the evolution of its own large language model (LLM) in AI era.

What Happened:

• Internal ByteDance documents confirm that OpenAI API was used in the creation of its foundational LLM.

• The development of their model, codenamed "Project Seed," utilized OpenAI in nearly every stage, including model training and assessment.

• Information from ByteDance's employee communication platform, Lark, hints at attempts to cover up this usage through what they term as "data desensitisation."

• There were reports in June that ByteDance started AI chatbot testing with its own employees, joining a race against other Chinese giants including Alibaba and Baidu who aim to build the Chinese version of ChatGPT.

• Allegedly ByteDance has breached the developer licenses of both Microsoft and OpenAI by using data generated by GPT to develop its own model.

OpenAI's company spokesperson states that the ByteDance account would stay closed while further investigation proceeds and if it is found that ByteDance didn't comply with their usage policy, they will ask for the changes or terminate the account.

OpenAI is increasing its safety procedures to mitigate the risks of harmful AI. A newly formed "safety advisory group" will oversee the technical teams and make recommendations to the leadership. Additionally, the company has provided the board with veto power over risky AI. These measures are part of the updated "Preparedness Framework", aiming to identify and analyse potentially catastrophic risks with models in development. Each model is evaluated based on four risk categories, including cybersecurity and persuasion. Predicted mitigations are factored into this analysis, and models with identified critical risks will not be developed further.

Bedfordshire police in the UK are using AI to reduce time spent on administrative tasks. AI is utilized to redact personal data from case files before submission to the Crown Prosecution Service, transforming a process that could take days into one that can be completed within minutes. Police retain a review of the results for accuracy, however, the AI technology is capable of decreasing time spent on this task by up to 90%. Policemen have endorsed the ability of the system to give them back significant time for policing duties.
