Arkansas news publisher Helena World Chronicle has lodged a class action lawsuit against Google and parent company Alphabet for allegedly using anticompetitive tactics to "siphon off" publishers' content, audience and revenue, in violation of U.S. antitrust law.

Purpose of Lawsuit:

• The complaint argues that Google is “starving the free press” by sharing publishers' content on Google and causing them to lose billions of dollars in revenue.

• The Atlantic reported that 75% of users' queries could be answered directly by AI, resulting in loss of click-through traffic to its website.

• The suit demands that for Google to use publishers' website data to train its AI products, it must obtain consent from the publishers. Those who opt out of SGE should still be allowed to appear in Google's search results.

• The suit also points out Google’s manipulation of AdSense rates and destruction of evidence, a concern raised in the Epic Games lawsuit against Google.

• The lawsuit comes after Google agreed to pay $73.5 million to Canadian media for the use of their content following an agreement with the Canadian government last month.

The suit, if successful, could set a precedent that requires Google to obtain consent prior to using data for AI product training and might impact the future operations of tech companies heavily relying on such data.
