On one side, we have Meta, whose bold move to utilize copyrighted data without authorization for AI training has sparked a flurry of controversy, raising critical questions about the intersection of AI and copyright law.

Contrastingly, OpenAI, in a seemingly prudential move, has partnered with global publishing giant Axel Springer. This partnership appears to be an experimental forge towards a novel strategy in copyright protection.

Are we witnessing a pivotal moment where two AI titans choose divergent paths that could shape the future of AI ethics and legality?

Meta Platforms reportedly used thousands of copyrighted books for AI training despite warnings from its lawyers, this detail emerged in a copyright infringement lawsuit.

Key Points:

  • Prominent authors, including Sarah Silverman and Michael Chabon, claim that Meta infringed their copyrights by using their works to train its artificial-intelligence language model, Llama, without permission.

  • The new complaint includes potentially significant evidence: chat logs from a Meta researcher discussing the procurement of the dataset and expressing concerns about it not being protected by U.S. copyright law.

  • The same researcher also said that Meta's legal department warned him that the data shouldn't be used, highlighting concerns about "books with active copyrights."

Lawsuits accusing tech firms of copyright infringements in AI models development could hike AI costs if successful. New provisional laws in Europe might necessitate companies to disclose data used in model training, increasing legal risks.

SECRET LAUNCH

Google has launched a range of new and updated services, including AI Studio, as part of its Gemini model family. AI Studio is a developer tool that serves as a gateway into the wider Gemini ecosystem. It allows developers to develop prompts and Gemini-based chatbots, and get API keys to be used in their apps.

AI Studio‘s Benefits:

  • Google can see the input and output of the API to improve product quality.

  • Developers can choose their models, adjust the temperature to control the output’s creative range, provide examples to provide tone and style instructions, and tune the model’s safety settings.

  • AI Studio is marketed as a gateway into Google’s wider AI ecosystem and connects directly to Vertex AI, its enterprise-ready generative AI developer platform.

  • Google plans to integrate Gemini in the Chrome Dev Tools and Google’s Firebase mobile development platform early next year.

AI Studio aims to be an easy onramp for developers of all skill levels. The company hopes it'll be seen not just as a developer tool, but also as a creativity tool for experimenting with AI model capabilities.

Global publisher Axel Springer partners with AI firm Open AI, which will summarize Springer's content in chatbot interactions. The deal includes material that necessitates subscription, with Springer as the cited source. This digital content will be available once an article is published, aiming for increased traffic and subscription revenue for Axel's brands. The agreement is for several years but isn't exclusive. This initiative comes as publishers consider legal action against tech companies for copyright infringement, using their content for AI model training without permission. A similar contract was signed by OpenAI and the Associated Press in July.

Rising use of AI in art, music, and code generation raises legal questions around copyright infringement. Generative AI models create works based on patterns identified in human-produced and often copyright-protected data. Though not an issue previously, the growing capability and application of this software raises ethical and legal issues. The Verge spoke with various experts on the subject who had conflicting opinions on the legality of these systems. Some say it's potentially copyright infringing, and others predict any law suits would fail. It was suggested that copyright protection may apply if the creator can prove substantial human input. Legal challenges could revolutionise the market, as occurred with file-sharing programs and music piracy.
