Microsoft Launches Zero-Water Data Centers to Cut AI Climate Effects
Data centers are the backbone of modern digital infrastructure, supporting everything from cloud computing to AI applications. However, they are also notorious for their substantial energy and water consumption. Traditional cooling methods, such as evaporative cooling, require vast amounts of water to dissipate the heat generated by servers and chips. As demand for high-performance computing grows, so does the environmental impact of these facilities.
Microsoft has been at the forefront of efforts to mitigate this impact. In August 2024, the company launched a new data center design that eliminates the need for water in cooling processes. This initiative is part of Microsoft's broader commitment to sustainability, as outlined in their Datacenter Community Pledge.
