Samsung And SK Hynix Are Vying For Tesla's Dojo Supercomputer Chip Orders
Tesla's ambitious plans to enhance its AI capabilities through next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) chips signal a transformative shift in the AI and semiconductor landscapes. By partnering with key players like Samsung and SK Hynix, Tesla is not only improving its Dojo supercomputer but also intensifying competition in the high-performance memory market.
- Tesla’s proprietary Dojo supercomputer, powered by the D1 AI chip, is designed to train neural networks for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. It currently uses HBM2e chips, which are becoming inadequate for its AI workloads.
- HBM4 chips promise to deliver 1.4 times the bandwidth of HBM3e while consuming 30% less power, enhancing Dojo's capabilities for processing large datasets efficiently and sustainably.
- The rivalry between Samsung and SK Hynix is heating up as both companies develop HBM4 prototypes to secure a contract with Tesla. This competition is crucial for establishing dominance in the projected $33 billion high-bandwidth memory market.
- Currently, SK Hynix leads the HBM market by supplying HBM3e chips to Nvidia. Their HBM4 chips are expected to be available by late 2025, bolstered by their partnership with TSMC.
- Samsung is advancing its HBM4 development using its 4-nanometer foundry process. Its integration of memory and foundry capabilities gives it a competitive advantage, although it faces tough competition from SK Hynix.
